2013 Awards and Grants

The Institute of Medical Ethics (IME) offers grants, student elective bursaries, internships and scholarships (covering the next academic year) for students wishing to do an intercalated degree in medical ethics or an allied subject. These grants are only for undergraduate students.

Institutional grants to support meetings or other activities of which medical ethics is a substantial component are also available.

Please note that each award has its own application form and that closing dates differ. You can download the relevant documents below.

 

Medical Student Electives

Bursaries of up to £600 each to support Medical Student Electives, or exceptionally Special Study Modules, on issues in medical ethics.  

Medical students, jointly with their supervisor, are invited to apply by 31 January 2013. Successful applicants will be informed by 1 April 2013. The BMA website provides a 'toolkit' that can be helpful for ethics and medical electives in resource-poor countries.

Medical Student Internships

Bursaries of up to £600 each to support Medical Ethics Internships.

Medical students, jointly with their supervisor, are invited to apply by 31 January 2013. Successful applicants will be informed by 1 April 2013.

Medical Student Intercalated Scholarships

Scholarships of up to £2,000 each to support students who wish to do an intercalated degree in Medical Ethics.Medical students, jointly with their supervisor, are invited to apply by Friday, 22 March 2013. Successful applicants will be informed by Friday, 31 May 2013.  Students may apply for a scholarship before they know the outcome of their course application. (See guideline 8 at the end of the application form.)

Institutional Grants

Grants of up to £500 will be considered to support meetings or other activities of which medical ethics is a substantial component and which promote understanding of ethical issues related to health care. Institutional grants are available throughout the year.

Student applications must be made jointly with a member of staff.

Conference Grants

Conference grants are awarded to UK based undergraduate medical students to support attendance at meetings, conferences or other activities of which medical ethics is a substantial component. Conference grants are available throughout the year.
